Northwestern University - 2025 Thinking Andean Studies: An Interdisciplinary Conference

  • Northwestern University (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The 5th edition of the Thinking Andean Studies conference will take place on April 11-12, 2025 at Northwestern University (Chicago Area)! We will continue our mission to strengthen the interdisciplinary network of scholars thinking through theory and praxis from the Andes. We invite you to another opportunity to help foster a mentoring relationship between established and emerging scholars.

As always, our event will provide a space for participants to share their research through paper presentations and roundtable discussions, and hopes to showcase the increasing number of scholars globally conducting research in and about the Andes.

In previous editions, we have asked participants to consider the importance of working across disciplines, and how to potentially theorize the Andes (Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia, as well as northern Argentina and Chile). This year, we invite participants to reflect on the long historical arc that has led to contemporary developments in politics, economics, cosmovision, philosophy, and culture in the region. What were the conditions that set up contemporary states of affairs in the region, and how can studying the relation between past and present help us (potentially) make interventions today.

Ideally, papers will reflect on some of the power dynamics that intersect to shape various facets of Andean societies. This interdisciplinary conference also will also aim to connect scholars with Indigenous language and culture advocates. In this spirit, the Conference will include presentations that explore the intersections of indigenous languages of the Andes and media and activism, language pedagogy, literature, performance, and community organizing.

Papers from any theoretical perspective and examining any aspect of the Andes are welcome, including, but not restricted to: cultural studies, cultural policy, literature, indigenous studies, language planning and policy, bilingual education, decolonization, colonial studies, anthropology, sociology, cultural heritage and reclamation, political science, linguistics, media studies, ethnicity, ethnomusicology, and history. Papers can be in English, Spanish or any of the languages spoken in the Andean region.

Sessions will take place on April 11 and 12, 2025 at Northwestern University, in Evanston, IL (on the border of the city of Chicago).

Center of Peruvian Arts will present the studies about Teaching Peruvian Indigenous Dance to Non Indigenous People.

Dance is a vehicle for the communication of ideas, stories, lessons, and aesthetics. It is an artform that reflects life and times. In being a reflection of life and times the creators of dance present their positions, comments, ideas on our world. Where does gender live in these reflections? How does gender live inside the artform? What does the performance of gender in dance communicate to audiences?

In this virtual summit, we open the space to discuss where gender currently lies in dance spaces and reimagine current practices in dance education, class, and performance. Reframing what we expect of our dancers. Redefining how we present roles and policies. Reimagining what performance looks like for the inclusion and acceptance of all dancing bodies.

Many dancers and choreographers may not consider gender at all in their practice. They may only be thinking about the body, the form, the movement aesthetic, shape, phrase, etc. However, for some, the communication and presentation of gender can be very apparent. What is the educator and choreographers role in ensuring this presentation is not harmful? Are we upholding and enforcing outdated concepts of gender expression and performance through our choreography and teaching?

Peruvian Dance with connection with the cosmos will be a virtual class workshop during the conference.

Chicago Winter Dance Festival

Let's celebrate the New Year by meeting up for our Chicago Winter Dance Festival on Friday, January 5, 2024 - 7pm-11pm

(sorry for the short notice) - see attached pdf announcement for the interesting details)

Clara Byom (an amazing Accordionist/Vocalist from Albuquerque, NM) told me she would be in Chicago in early January

She and I discussed the possibility of her playing for the VDR for some in person dancing

So, I conjured up the idea of a Winter Dance Festival, once we got to the OK to use the Color Club's big ballroom for the event

So, we're inviting all of you ethnic dance and music enthusiasts to attend this fabulous in-person event

(we also invite our usual Friday Night Zoomers to attend online)

I've expanded the concept of Clara playing live for the Friday dance into a "Winter Dance Festival" reaching out to many folks

see attached announcement - this will be updated on the VDR website as the program gets more developed

https://virtualdanceroom.net/winterdance/

This event was planned very quickly and on short notice after I got the OK to use the Color Club's 2nd floor ballroom

our guest musicians will play live music sets throughout the evening

Clara Byom (Accordion), Danny Wallenberg (Accordion), Vlade Rokvic (Accordion)

our guest dance leaders will teach 1 dance each during the evening

Stanislav Ivanov (Bulgarian), Milan Andrijanic (Serbian), Ruben Pachas (Peruvian), Nina Lusterman (Evanston Group), Paul Collins (VDR/EDC)

we'll play recorded music in between live music sets

Please Spread the word and forward this email and attachment to your ethnic dance and music loving friends and get together some car pools to come to Chicago's Color Club

when: Friday January 5, 2024 - 7:00pm - 11:00pm

what to bring: please bring food/snacks, beverages and your enthusiasm to share

where in-person: Color Club (former Latvian Center), 4146 N Elston Ave, Chicago, IL 60618

Elston is NW Diag - Hamlin is 3800 W - plenty of street parking

where online: https:virtualdanceroom.net/letsdance/

Directions to the Color Club:

Exit at Irving Park Rd (4000 N, Illinois Route 19) & Pulaski Rd (4000 N) exit on I-90/94 (Kennedy Expressway)

continue from exit to Irving Park Rd (IL Route 19)

turn East on Irving Park Rd and continue East to Hamlin (3800 W) - 2nd light

turn Left on Hamlin (3800 W) and proceed N to Elston Ave (NW diagonal)

look for street parking on Hamlin or on Elston - some spots are free and some are metered, but meters stop at 9pm

also some free street parking on Avers (1 block W of Hamlin)

NOTE: Most metered spots come with a two-hour maximum parking time limit. Please check the signs to confirm as times do vary. At 10 pm (sometimes earlier), residential zone parking meters are suspended till 8 am.

if there is interest we'll plan for an after-party somewhere - but you gotta let me know (yes or no) now if you're interested in this

History

Every October 31, Creole Song Day is celebrated in Peru and the Center of Peruvian Arts with the group Acuarela Criolla of Anibal Bellido, considered the first Peruvian guitar in Chicago, seeks to disseminate Peruvian Creole art and promote the manifestations of this through music, dance and culinary art. According to the history of Peru, it was in 1944 that President Manuel Prado Ugarteche established the commemoration of Creole Song Day on October 31, through a supreme resolution, considering stimulating this demonstration that strengthens our national identity. Creole music was forged in the popular neighborhood of Barrios Altos, El Rímac and La Victoria, in the first decades of the 20th century and to this day this Creole culture is preserved, promoted and disseminated.

The Chicago Public Library - Portage Cragin celebrates the Hispanic Heritage Month and in this opportunity the center of Peruvian Arts will do a Peruvian Cultural History Program.

Date: Saturday, October 7

Time: 1-2 pm ( be there at 12 pm )

Place : Portage - Cragin Chicago Public Library

Address: 5108 W. Belmont Ave | Chicago IL

Center of Peruvian Arts is a cultural organization based in Chicago. We represent the voice of the Peruvian ancestral cultures in contemporary times. We celebrate how the Peruvian traditions grow each time and transform new generations in the great city of Chicago. Jessica Loyaga and Ruben Pachas, elementary school teachers, are the President, performers, and General Artistic Directors. They have been doing Indigenous research in Chicago since 1995.

The performances today will show the wedding party from the Cusco city called Capac Moro Sipaschay, the jungle dance Shapish of Chupacas, and the Afro Peruvian dance, Chinchivy.

Dance 1: Qapa Moro Sipaschay

The message of the dances is based on human fertility. It is a dance that represents the noctural qashwas, where young singles meet at night and go up to Qapac Moro Hill, to perform their custom. The men carry a charango, or chiller, and the women accompany them with their songs.

Dance 2: Shapish of Chupaca

This dance satirizes the adventurous warriors, who marched to the jungle for fight. After being defeated, they return dressed as natives, with red faces from the punishment of the heat. The name "Shapish" comes from "chapet'on", a term used to refer to adventurous Spandiards.

Social Justice Stage

Thank you to Chicago Urban Art Retreat Center (CUARC) for invite us and participate in this great event.

Chicago Urban Art Retreat Center (CUARC) seeks to bring people together by offering socially impacting art, positive programs, creative workshops, women retreats and volunteer opportunities that can engage a community.

To accomplish this mission, CUARC offers a safe retreat center that encourages artists, young and old, with interests ranging from A-to-Z, individually and in groups, to come and get involved in activities that are healing, creative, and productive. CUARC believes that art can be utilized for positive change and artists themselves often inspire others.

The events, exhibits, workshops, and programs of CUARC are all-encompassing and meant to encourage a healthy lifestyle. These activities range from learning how to garden to practicing basic meditation techniques. At the same time, CUARC provides interactive exposure to art that is submitted by underrepresented cultures and community groups all over Chicago and the world. CUARC is here to encourage a diverse community to come together. We encourage our volunteers to educate themselves about social justice issues, and what we call the isms. We hope our volunteers will not leave it up to someone else to educate them about these important issues. Instead, we hope they will go out of their way to read multiple books on these issues, see many plays of the topics, attend seminars, participate in discussions, take classes, and more, in order to know as much as possible as these important issues. Furthermore, we want them to take the information and educate others so the world will be a better place! To help in this plan, we have attached a series of articles about various social justice issues in the pages below.
